Maria Dockweiler, Øystein Gullvåg Holter and Lotta Snickare explore the narratives of men experiencing downsizing in the oil industry. A gender analysis of these narratives illuminates how masculinity is negotiated and has shifted historically from a‘frontier masculinity culture’ to a ‘culture of dependable and responsible men’. Combining critical sensemaking and organizational theory, frame analysis and masculinity theory, the authors show how elements of hegemonic masculinity that are hidden or subdued in normal times rise to the forefront in times of downsizing.
