Abstract

In Poland, women’s rights, the rights of sexual minorities, and the concept of gender itself are subjects that cause contestations and counteractions. National conservative and right-wing populist parties and politicians, as well as the Catholic church, have for years attacked transnational treaties concerning gender-based violence, sex education, what they call “LGBT ideology” and abortion rights. This has in turn caused mass protests and opposition. In their book from 2021: Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment, Agnieszka Graff and Elzbieta Korolczuk state that “Gender, religion and politics are inextricably linked in the current moment: the conflict around ‘gender’ is also a struggle over the future of democracy”. The autumn of 2023 will bring with it a parliamentary election and campaigning in Poland. What has happened? What will happen? And how can we interpret and understand what some refer to as an “anti-gender movement”?

Renata Mieńkowska-Norkiene, from the University of Warsaw and Jørn Holm-Hansen from Oslo Metropolitan University will provide us with their perspectives on these matters, and we will have some time for questions and discussion.
