Legal Pluralism, Gender and Political Islam in Norway (completed)

This project investigates how different family-dispute resolution forums that are rooted in divergent worldviews struggle to reconcile women’s individualistic human rights with demands of a collectivist Muslim culture and vise versa.

About the project

The project is exploring norms of gender and political islam and will focuse on at least two religious institutions in Norway.

  • What norms of gender are communicating from these institutions through writing and symbolic (figurative) material?

The research also aims to

  • accumulate information about the forms, phenomena and dynamics of legal pluralism in Norway and

  • to objectively document the subjective views of informants in the research, with the goal to understand the situation, problems and problem-solving mechanisms and methods of the Muslim immigrant women in Norway.

The information thus generated will hopefully help the Norwegian state to make the benefits of the welfare state system and the protection of law more easily available to the Muslim immigrant women by changing/making relevant laws and legal rules/regulations.
